Carolina Piedmont Agility Raleigh, NC January 4-5, 2020

We got 4 Qs out of 5 runs on Saturday and 1 Q out of 5 runs on Sunday. The moral of that story is that sometimes you’re on and sometimes you’re not! We did get our first Premier JWW Q on Saturday so I was pretty excited about that. The other Qs were in Excellent STD (2), Excellent JWW (1), and Novice FAST. We’re going back this weekend so we’ll see how things progress!

Our first Premier JWW Q!
Our first Excellent JWW Q!
Our first Excellent STD Q.
This is the only run we didn’t Q this day. Boo.
Our second Q in Novice FAST, 4th Q of the day. I was so proud of Ann!
Premier JWW Sunday morning. No Q. Can’t get them all!
No Q here. Losing focus. Boo.
No Q.
The only Q we got this day.
Time 2 Beat no Q today.

Elvis’ Farewell Ukelele Album

Elvis was the dog I had before Ann Perkins. He was by my side through many life changes and left me on the last day of the last show I produced, Sister Act. I left the local theatre scene after that. I felt so guilty because I had to spend so much time in the theatre that I was not able to spend it with him. I may be over compensating with Ann Perkins, but I want to spend as much time with her as I can. Elvis’ favorite thing was music. It always was, even when he was a baby puppy. That’s why he was named Elvis. I knew he was getting ready to go over the rainbow bridge so in the last several weeks of his life, I played him a song on my uke so he could relax. He was having issues with settling down and once he heard me play and sing, he would immediately calm down and go to sleep. I miss him so much and still love him so much. I hope you enjoy his album. The last video was taken the day he went over the rainbow bridge.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas December 18, 2016
Notes from Facebook: Music therapy for dogs at work. Music is a powerful tool.
I’ll Be Home for Christmas December 21, 2016
Notes from Facebook: I’ll Be Home for Christmas for my Elvis.
Silent Night December 23, 2016
Notes from Facebook: Silent Night. Elvis is calm. I don’t think it is a fluke. Music actually calms him down. What you aren’t seeing is that before I take the video, he’s walking around crying and after about 2-3 minutes, he calms down like you see in the videos. Music is therapeutic and powerful.
O Holy Night December 25, 2016
Notes from Facebook: I got a request for an Elvis video yesterday. This is O Holy Night for LaRaisha DiEvelyn Burnette. Music is still working to calm him down at night. I’m not making this up!!! Truly amazing. Merry Christmas everyone!
Charlie Chaplin’s Smile January 3, 2017
Notes from Facebook: Request from Lauren Mazzola Maasch. Charlie Chaplin’s Smile for my Elvis.
Amy Winehouse’s F Me Pumps January 4, 2017
Notes from Facebook: This is a tribute to one of my favorites. Amy Winehouse’s F Me Pumps lullaby style. Maddi Leroux this one is for you.
Amazing Grace January 6, 2017
Notes from Facebook: For Lauren Hodges. Well, it’s for Elvis, but at the request of Lauren.
🙂
Moon River January 7, 2016
Notes from Facebook: Ok Bryan Putnam, this one’s for you. You can hear Elvis breathing through the whole thing. But his eyes are open and he’s listening. He even winks at the end.
🙂 Moon River Audrey Hepburn style from one of my favorite movies, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
You’ve Got a Friend in Me January 8, 2017
Notes from Facebook: You’ve Got a Friend in Me. Randy Newman, Toy Story.
That’s All (Nat King Cole) January 9, 2017
Notes from Facebook: Request from Kim Mackey Pacheco. That’s All in the style of Nat King Cole because I’m almost certain she didn’t mean That’s All by Genesis. Elvis is comfortable right now and his breathing is steady. These songs are helping me to let go and prepare to send him over that rainbow bridge. I told him yesterday that it was ok to go and that Yuki, Hana, Russell, Peanut, Popcorn, and Jaxon (his family) would all be waiting for him. Thanks for listening and supporting me through this super hard transition! Love to you all!
Somewhere Over the Rainbow January 10, 2017
Notes from Facebook: Here’s my rendition of Iz Kamakawiwo’Ole’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow. This one is for Heidi Rayher.
Brahams Lullaby January 11, 2017
Notes from Facebook: Sleep tight El dawg. I’m right beside you. Brahms Lullaby.

Notes from Facebook: It’s time now to sing out though the story never ends. Let’s celebrate, remember a year in the life of friends!
Love Me Tender January 14, 2017
Notes from Facebook: It was only fitting that I do an Elvis tune for my Elvis. Love Me Tender by the one and only, Elvis Presley.
On the Willows (Godspell) January 15, 2017
This video was not published on Facebook. Still one of my favs.
Imagine January 15, 2017
Imagine it. Peace, harmony, inclusion, kindness, love.
Rainbow Connection January 15, 2017
One of my favorites as a kid.
There is No Greater Love (Amy Winehouse)
The Rose (Bette Midler) January 16, 2017
Notes fro Facebook: The Rose in the style of Bette Midler. Elvis is not ready to exit the building just yet.
My Way (Frank Sinatra) January 21, 2017
Facebook notes: Just a couple more of these videos. Elvis made a dramatic turn for the worse on Friday. We thought he might bounce back with a shot of prednisone and antibiotics, but it’s not looking good. He’s had a great run and I will miss him so much. He’s hanging on for me to finish up Sister Act. I will play today’s show FULL OUT for my Elvis.
Let There Be Peace on Earth January 22, 2016
This was the last song I sang to Elvis right before he went over the rainbow bridge. Notes from Facebook that day: Elvis has left the building. One last song for him before going over the rainbow bridge. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us through this journey. Let there be peace on earth.

Carolina Canine Agility Trial December 21-22, 2019 Raleigh, NC

We participated in our 6th AKC agility trial in Raleigh this past weekend. We got our Open Agility and Open JWW titles. We even got a Q in Novice FAST. The trial was held at the JB Hunt Horse Arena in Raleigh NC. It was an indoor facility with a dirt floor. I think Ann likes the dirt floor. We got qualifying scores in Open STD (2), Open JWW (1) and Novice FAST (1). We got our titles in Open Agility and Open Jumpers. We’re super excited and still working very hard to make it to the top! Hope you enjoy the videos!

First Run of the day. December 21, 2019 7:45AM. I’m proud of how well Ann ran even though we didn’t Q. This was a super difficult Premier JWW course.
Premier Standard run Saturday December 21, 2019 This one was really hard. We didn’t Q, but I’m still proud of Ann’s performance. She’s getting there.
Open Standard run December 21, 2019. Our first Q of the weekend.
Novice FAST. December 21, 2019. This one is like Gamblers in USDAA. You have to get a bunch of points and then send your dog into the obstacles beyond the pink line and get it done within a certain amount of time. We got our second Q of the weekend here.
Last run of the day. I was exhausted and had a giant headache. Didn’t Q because Ann went into the wrong end of the tunnel.
First run of the day AGAIN. 7:45AM. Sunday, December 21, 2019. This was a Premier JWW course. So hard and we didn’t Q but I’m still proud of Ann’s run.
Again, a super hard course that we didn’t Q, but I’m still proud of Ann’s run.
Almost Q. Back jumped a jump. Oh well.
This was our 3rd Q of the weekend and our title run for Open Agility!
Our 4th and final Q of the weekend and our title run for Open JWW. Onward to EXCELLENT Standard and EXCELLENT JWW! GAME ON.

Show and Go at Azalea Dog Training Club

Here are a couple of videos from the Azalea Dog Training Club’s Show and Go on November 9, 2019. A Show and Go is where you can go and run a course with ring crew sitting in the ring and judges walking about. It is good for training to get your dog used to random people walking about the ring like in a real competition situation. There are a bunch of distractions as well. Ann is getting better at the distractions, but I probably needed my mom to be walking about to train her not to go to her in the ring.

Larry Bray took these videos for us! Thank you, Larry! And thanks to Barbara Bray for putting the Show and Go together! Also, we wanted to thank everyone who gave us some good feedback and suggestions of things to work on. I am always open for observations, insight, and instruction. We are new and still don’t really know what we’re doing. We just have a lot of fun doing agility!!!

Ann loves running agility.
This is a good one where we worked on the start line stay.

Fayetteville KC Trial, Sanford November 1-2, 2019

On our first run of the weekend, Time 2 Beat, Ann decided to go sniffing for my mom and we did not qualify. So, my mom sat out in the car all day and my dad came to get her. Then after she left the building, Ann got a Q in Open JWW. The next day, Ann got a Q in Time 2 Beat, Open JWW and Open Standard. So, we determined that my mom cannot come to trials until Ann and I get a little more confidence and Ann can ignore distraction and override her impulse to do something she wants over what I’m asking her to do. We’re working on it!!

My mom was sitting in a chair on the floor against the wall. You can see Ann go off course to go look for her.
Our first Open JWW Q! Ann popped out of the weaves, but in Open, you can have a boo boo.
Premier Standard courses are super hard and challenging. This is super sloppy but I think Ann was still looking for my mom in the ring. We didn’t Q, obviously.
Open Standard. Didn’t Q. Probably my fault. I will do a little more studying of this video to see where I can improve.
Another Q in Time 2 Beat! I’m not sure what happened at the very beginning. UGH. We will practice tunnel beginning.
Our first Open Standard Q!
Another Premier JWW course. So many difficult elements, but we will get there. Didn’t Q, of course.
Our second Q in Open JWW!

Moore County KC Sanford, NC October 26-27, 2019

We attended the Moore County Kennel Club’s trial this weekend at Bon-Clyde Learning Center https://www.bon-clyde.com in Sanford, NC. If anyone is interested in dog training, this facility in Sanford is a great place to train!

I was really proud of Ann’s performance this weekend! We got a Q in Time 2 Beat (first place) and a Q in Novice Jumpers (first place) on Saturday, October 26. Then, on Sunday, October 27, we got a Q in Time 2 Beat (second place) and a Q in Novice Jumpers (second place). So, because this was our 3rd Q in Novice Jumpers (under 2 different judges), we got our Novice Jumpers title! Yahoo! Now we are in the Open Standard and Open Jumpers classes. We ran Open Standard both days this weekend and didn’t Q. My takeaway from this weekend is that I would like to work on consistency, focus, accuracy, confidence, teeter, threadles, serpentines, and accuracy when running full blast.

I’m learning a lot from the people at the trials and especially my teachers and friends from the Azalea Dog Training Club. I have to give a big shout out to Barbara Bray, who has been doing agility since the 1990s and runs 3 dogs in these trials, which is amazing. I can’t imagine juggling 3 dogs through these trials. Barbara is an inspiration and an awesome teacher and encourages Ann and me to reach for the stars. I have to also thank Judith Hawk and Joanne Brubach for their constant encouragement and assistance and nuggets of wisdom. I need to give a shout out to Dave Moore and Victor Pearsall for encouraging us from the sidelines! Finally, I also want to give a shoutout and congratulate my training buddy, Eric Wilson, who works really hard with his 11-year-old Cocker Spaniel. He got his Open title this weekend and now is in the Excellent class. So proud of him!

So back to Ann. As a re-cap, this is our 5th trial ever. It is our 4th AKC trial. We did a USDAA trial last weekend. Anyway, we got out of the Novice class in 4 trials. We are making progress. I have no idea what to compare that to and if that’s good or not. We are running Premier Standard and Premier Jumpers classes and people tell me that Ann is doing great in those classes, although we haven’t gotten a Q yet because she always wants to miss 1 obstacle per run. Oh well. We’ll get there.

I’ll post the videos I have. I don’t think I got a video of our title Novice Jumpers run but that’s the way it goes sometimes. The rest is here including the one where I fell down. Yay.

Time 2 Beat Saturday, October 26, 2019. We got a Q and first place too! Yay!
Open Standard Sanford October 26, 2019. This is where I fell down but I got back up and kept running because I wasn’t about to waste a run. Falling on turf is no joke. I’m watching Sunday Night Football right now and I just can’t imagine falling on that stuff ALL THE TIME. Anyway, of course we didn’t Q on this run but we probably could have if I hadn’t messed it up. Handler error. Ugh.
This is the Premier JWW run from October 26, 2019. It’s a super hard, technical course. The rules used to be that you had to be in the Excellent class before you could sign up for Premier courses, but AKC changed that so anyone can sign up to do it. Since I like a challenge, I sign up. I think Ann did ok on this course, considering at this point we were still in the Novice JWW class!
Even though we had a couple of mistakes, we got a Q on this Novice JWW run. Whew.
Time 2 Beat on Sunday. We got a Q and second place! There are no refusals in Time 2 Beat, so that’s why we can keep getting Qs.
We messed this up too. We’ll work on it and come back better next time! Premier Standard run from Sunday.
Last run of the day. It was late. We were tired. It’s really hard to stay focused for that long and when you’re in the Open and Novice classes, they put you at the end of the day, which is super hard. But I guess it’s like an initiation process. Something you just have to get through.

Our first USDAA trial in Youngsville, NC Oct. 19-20, 2019

We did our first USDAA trial Teamworks in Youngsville, NC this past weekend. Very different feel than the AKC trials we went to this summer. There are different types of courses and they add a game component that is actually very fun and challenging! It’s not all about doing the course you’ve been given. You can make up your own course and accumulate points and sometimes you might win a little bit of money! (We didn’t this time, boo.) We did Q in Starters Jumpers the first day though! Lots of fun and met a bunch of people too. Very laid back feel and the place was awesome. Thanks to my friends Heather and David for hosting me at their beautiful home in Wake Forest and for coming to support us at the trial. They even brought me a peanut butter and honey sandwich that was ahhhmazing! Thank you, Heather and David!!! See you again soon!

I also want to thank my teacher, Andrea Arbogast, for encouraging Ann and me to shoot for the stars. We probably would not have signed up for this trial if she had not encouraged me to do so. Thank you so much! We had a great time!

This was our first time doing a game called Gamblers. You have to accumulate a certain number of points in the first 25 seconds and then the buzzer will go off and then you do the gamble part of the course. The gamble on this course was the tunnel to the next tunnel, then the jump. The handler cannot go over the line. I got enough points and if Ann didn’t get stuck on the teeter, we probably would have gotten a Q! But alas, we got buzzed off just before she jumped the last jump. Next time!

This was our Starters Standard the first day of the trial. USDAA’s rules are that the dog has to down on the table. AKC doesn’t have that rule. We practiced down on the table for about a week before this trial and she got it at home but she wasn’t doing it on the course. She also had some issues with the weaves, but eventually got it on the last try. She’s doing better and better so I’m proud of her. Not sad about getting NQ.
We got a Q in Starters Standard! She’s a fast little dog and loves to run so this course was great for her!

We messed up the tunnel entry right at the beginning. She was supposed to go into the right hand side and it should have been easy, but I must have pulled her off course. Oh well. Missed that !, but she’s pretty much following me around the course otherwise so that’s good! Also, 2 dogs before this run, a dog went to the bathroom in the back corner and she stopped to take a sniff. It happens!
This is what’s called Steeplechase in USDAA. Kind of a hard course but Ann did it. She messed up the entrance of the tunnel again. Not sure why she’s doing that. Gotta figure that out and fix it.
This is one of the tournament courses called Grand Prix Qualifier. I’m still not exactly sure what that means, but we messed it up so we didn’t qualify. Lol. I’m just trying to get as much practice and exposure to different situations as possible. It was fun and she actually did pretty well. Just not perfect…yet.
If you want to see something funny, this is the one. I promise we practiced down on the table and she can do it. She was just being stubborn and wouldn’t down! Anyway, I had to get on the ground to get her to down and she finally did it.

When we first began.

Wow. This is when we first began. It takes a lot of patience and time to train a dog. I had no idea.

This is really the beginning. The Azalea Dog Training Club was still in the old teeny tiny space.
This is the first show and go we did at Bon-Clyde in Sanford.

Sunday practice!

Every Sunday I practice with Ann and some friends. My mom and dad come to watch and this summer, my nephew Kenji came to practice too. We usually practice with Eric and his 11-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Amber. Eric also has a new puppy, Cadence, who is a beautiful Cocker Spaniel and full of energy. Judith and her Russell Terriers, Fiona and Hunter usually practice with us too. Judith has another Russell Terrier, Scout, but she’s just a puppy (not old enough for agility) and competes in the confirmation ring because she’s pretty. Scout was competing this weekend so they weren’t at practice today. These are some videos of today’s practice. Ann makes me RUN RUN RUN. Yikes.

This is an Open Standard course that was at the Columbia, SC trial a couple of weeks ago. We set it up to try it.
This is an Open JWW course from the trial I went to in Columbia, SC. We modified it and put a threadle in it because Ann’s not solid on threadles yet. I’m practicing blind crosses, which is hard because Ann is so fast and I actually have to be in front of her to do a blind cross.
Short video of us practicing a blind cross.
Here is Eric and Amber’s practice run. Keep in mind that Amber is 11 years old!!! She’s still moving pretty fast for an 11-year-old!
This is little Scout in competition at the Hanover Kennel Club Dog Show at Legion Stadium. She is such a sweetie! Scout won Best of Breed and Winner’s Dog and Group One Owner Handler both days this weekend. She’s got a really long name that I don’t remember. She’s a legit purebred dog, unlike Ann. Lol.

Ann on a SUP.

Ann loves to swim. She’s definitely a water dog. This is a video of her first time on a SUP. I’m not standing because I wanted to be sure she wasn’t going to jump off and swim away (which she did but when I called her to me, she swam back). Good thing she has good recall skills.
